The Human Spine Is Composed of 33 Indivual Bony Units
The human spine is a highly complex structure composed of 33 individual bony units, or vertebrae, stacked upon one another like a column of lined-up napkin rings. Disks of shock-absorbing cartilage and a lubricating joint fluid separate the vertebrae from each other. Encased within this hollow stack of vertebrae are hundreds of nerve fibers that transmit information between the brain and various organs and limbs.

  Frequently Asked Questions
What do chiropractics do?

Chiropractic is the science dealing with the relationship of structure, mainly of the spine and the function of the nervous system. At the same time, chiropractics examine how this relationship affects restoration and the preservation of health.

Even though chiropractic is the third largest heath care discipline, it is the only one that is based on natural healing methods. Therefore chiropractics do not prescribe drugs nor do they perform surgery. Instead, chiropractors focus on the innate healing power of the human body and support a balanced neuromusculoskeletal sytem.

What is the pop-sound often associated with chiropractics?

The pop or cracking sound is a natural response to the release of carbon dioxide and nitrogen gases as they are released from the joint cavity during the adjustment. Many people believe that this is the sound of the joint going back into its original place. However, that is NOT true.

What is joint dysfunction?

Joint dysfunction affects the muscles, nerves and the blood flow. Even though the body can compensate for the lack of movement, it has to work harder and eventually the joint becomes irritated, sensitive and painful. Once the joint is irritated, the local muscles get tired very quickly and tighten up. Finally a spasm can be the result. Blood supply to the muscles and the joints also suffers under joint dysfunction.

What is the neuromusculoskeletal system?

Our entire body is controlled by the nervous system. The spine is indirectly and directly related to the nervous system. Muscles and bones are intimately linked, such as the muscles being attached to bones, the relationship between the nervous, muscular and skeletal systems play a critical role in the health of the human body. The interrelationship between these three system is consequently called the neuromusculoskeletal system. A chiropractor makes adjustments to the spine, to improve joint, muscle and nerve function.

How many chiropractors practice in the U.S.?

Today there are approximately 50,000 practicing chiropractors in the United States. Research suggests that the number of licensed chiropractors will double by the year 2010 to over 100,000, which will exceed the estimates of a 16 percent increase not too long ago.
